Dalgliesh star Bertie Carvel's real name and how a tragic loss helped detective role

Dalgliesh has returned to Channel 5, with the British crime drama continuing to draw inspiration from PD James' Adam Dalgliesh novels, starring Bertie Carvel as the enigmatic detective-poet. Born Robert Hugh Carvel aka Bertie for short, in London's Marylebone, the actor comes from a family of accomplished professionals - his mother was a psychologist, and his father a journalist.

After studying English at university, he secured a place at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. One of his standout stage roles was as Miss Trunchbull in the Broadway production of Matilda at the Shubert Theatre, earning him numerous awards.

Beyond acting, Bertie supports the Globe Theatre's education department's 'Playing Shakespeare' programme, which provides free educational resources and theatre tickets to secondary school students. In his personal life, Bertie married actress Sally Scott in 2019 after a decade-long relationship, and they have a son born in May 2020.

Tragically, Bertie lost his mother, Patricia, just before starting work on Dalgliesh, and has spoken candidly about the devastating loss. In an interview with The Guardian, he described his mother as "a force – fiercely intelligent, outspoken and opinionated", noting that his son has inherited many of her admirable qualities, saying: "My son has very much inherited his granny's strength of will."

"Stubborn like you wouldn't believe. Even though they just missed meeting each other – she died six months before he was born – she is so present in him. I feel powerfully aware of their connection.", reports the Express.

Bertie's acting ambitions flourished during his university years, and he fondly recounted how supportive his mother had been: "Mum came to all of my shows, without fail. She was always proud. I could not have asked for more love and support."

He now resides in the London flat where he spent his childhood, which holds half of his mum's life within its walls. His son sleeps in what used to be his own bedroom. For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter.

Bertie attributed his depth of emotion in his Dalgliesh role to the recent loss of his mother. Probing into the essence of 'keeping going', a recurring theme in the show's second season, Bertie admits, "I don't think he knows and a big personal connection in the first series for me was grief because I had recently lost my mother."

He added: "I was able to channel that, work through that to some extent. Another great privilege of being an artist is you get to put your own life... there's a very porous membrane between the two."

Series three of Dalgliesh is on Channel 5. Thursdays at 9pm.
